We understand the environmental concerns surrounding traditional tanning processes. - That's why PoM is actively evaluating the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of our leather supply chain through direct collaboration (DC) with our material partners. This ongoing LE (Leather Evaluation) initiative focuses on:
- Sustainable Sourcing (SS): Investigating the origin and ethical treatment of animals used for the leather.
- Tanning Technology (TT): Assessing the environmental impact of the tanning process, including water usage and the use of potentially harmful chemicals.
- Waste Reduction (WR): Evaluating practices to minimize waste throughout the leather production cycle.
Transparency is key.

- Potentially lower environmental impact: Some vegan leathers, particularly those made from plant materials, can boast a lower environmental footprint compared to traditional leather tanning.
Minus (-)
- Durability: While advancements are being made, some vegan leathers may not yet match the durability of genuine leather.
- Environmental Impact: The sustainability of vegan leather depends on the materials used. Some types, like those made from PU (polyurethane) can be petroleum-based and not readily biodegradable.
Science & Production about Vegan leather:
Vegan leather is a broad term encompassing various materials designed to mimic the look and feel of leather. Common types include:
- PU (Polyurethane): The most common type, offering a versatile and affordable option. However, PU can be derived from petroleum and may not be biodegradable.
- PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride): A less breathable and potentially less durable option compared to PU.
- Plant-based Leathers: Emerging options made from materials like pineapple leaves, cork, or mushroom mycelium. These often boast a lower environmental impact but can be more expensive.
