The idea for International Podcast Day originated in 2013 when podcaster Steve Lee, inspired by the existence of various "National Days" in the United States, decided to create a day to celebrate podcasting. This led to the launch of the first celebration, then called National Podcast Day, in the United States in 2014. The inaugural event featured a 6-hour live stream with call-ins from podcasters across the country, a Q&A session, and endorsements for local podcast meetups.
Recognizing the global reach and impact of podcasts, the event was rebranded as International Podcast Day in 2015. Since then, it has grown to encompass hundreds of podcasters from nearly 100 countries, featuring live-streamed content in multiple languages.
International Podcast Day is a testament to the medium's evolution and impact on how people consume media.
While the term "podcasting" was first coined in 2004 and the first podcast service provider, Libsyn, emerged later that year, it was milestones like Apple incorporating podcast support in iTunes in 2005 and podcasts hitting 1 billion subscribers on Apple in 2013 that marked its significant growth.
